Kava chain
Overview
Kava is a layer-1 blockchain that runs two parallel execution environments side by side: an Ethereum co-chain fully compatible with EVM tooling and smart contracts, and a Cosmos co-chain supporting IBC interoperability with the wider Cosmos ecosystem, connected by a translator module. KAVA is the native token, used for proof-of-stake staking by validators and delegators to secure the network, for on-chain governance over protocol upgrades and treasury spending, and for fee settlement. The most significant economic change came with the Kava 15 upgrade: from 1 January 2024 the network moved to a zero-inflation model, fixing total supply at 1.08 billion KAVA, with validator rewards funded solely from transaction fees and a community pool rather than new issuance. Kava documents its architecture as the first layer 1 to combine Cosmos SDK speed and scalability with Ethereum developer support. Kava launched as a Cosmos SDK chain and later added an EVM co-chain to become a dual-environment network. On 1 January 2024, via the Kava 15 upgrade, it switched to zero inflation with a fixed 1.08 billion KAVA supply, ending new token issuance for validator rewards.
