Overview

Merlin Chain is a Bitcoin layer-2 network built by Bitmap Tech that combines ZK-rollups, decentralised oracles, a data availability layer and on-chain fraud proofs to extend Bitcoin's capabilities. It is EVM-compatible, so Ethereum-style smart contracts and tooling work on it, while also supporting Bitcoin-native asset protocols including BRC-20, Stamps, BRC-420, Atomicals, Pipe and Bitmap. Its mainnet debuted in February 2024 and by April 2024 it was the largest Bitcoin layer 2 by total value locked, having accumulated over $3.6 billion in TVL and more than 200 native dApps. The native token MERL, issued under the BRC-20 standard with a total supply of 2.1 billion, is used for staking, delegation to collators, transaction fees (particularly for projected L3 usage), liquidity, collateral and governance. Merlin Chain launched its mainnet in February 2024 and rapidly became the largest Bitcoin layer 2 by TVL, reported at over $3.6 billion by April 2024 with 200+ native dApps. The MERL token launch followed, issued as a BRC-20 asset with a 2.1 billion supply.
