Overview
Theta Network is a decentralised cloud and video-delivery platform that now describes itself as 'the decentralised compute layer for AI'. Its blockchain is EVM-compatible, supports Turing-complete smart contracts and runs a hybrid consensus in which 20 to 30 enterprise validator nodes are paired with thousands of community-run Guardian Nodes, processing roughly 1,000 transactions per second; the Theta Metachain extends this into an interconnected multi-chain architecture aimed at unlimited scalability with sub-second block finalisation. The network uses a dual-token model: THETA, with a fixed supply of 1 billion, is the governance and staking token for validator and guardian nodes, while TFUEL, with an initial supply of 5 billion that increases annually, pays for on-chain transactions, edge node work and smart contract interactions. Theta EdgeCloud, a hybrid cloud-edge AI computing platform, launched on 1 May 2024 and offers more than 10,000 global nodes with 80 PetaFLOPS of GPU compute for AI inference, model training, video processing and containerised workloads. Enterprise backers include Google, Samsung, Sony, Binance and Creative Artists Agency, with media partnerships including Lionsgate and MGM. Theta began as a decentralised video delivery network using viewer bandwidth-sharing and NFT-based digital rights management, then expanded into general edge compute. Its EdgeCloud AI computing platform launched on 1 May 2024, and the network has since repositioned around decentralised GPU compute for AI.
