Dapper Labs is a Vancouver-rooted venture studio for consumer digital ownership, founded in 2018 by Roham Gharegozlou and Dieter Shirley. It is the company behind CryptoKitties, the 2017 game that first put NFTs in front of a mainstream audience and that has drawn 2 million+ kitties and 400,000+ players, and behind NBA Top Shot, the licensed basketball moment collectible platform with 1.6 million+ collectors and $1.2 billion+ in sales. Because Ethereum could not handle CryptoKitties' load, Dapper built its own chain, Flow, a consumer-and-finance-focused blockchain with 42 million+ wallets and 975 million+ transactions, used by PayPal, the NBA and Disney. Its current portfolio also includes Disney Pinnacle, NFL ALL DAY, the virtual influencer Miquela, and Peak Money, a consumer finance app offering DeFi-powered yield strategies and prize-linked accounts. Cumulative gross merchandise value across its products exceeds $1.4 billion. Dapper has raised over $500 million from 127 investors including a16z, Union Square Ventures and Google Ventures. Its stated vision is that individuals should own digital assets irrevocably, creators should build without platform risk, and open protocols should underpin everyday digital life. CryptoKitties (2017) congested Ethereum and prompted Dapper Labs to build Flow. The studio incorporated in 2018 under Roham Gharegozlou and Dieter Shirley, scaled through NBA Top Shot to $1.2bn+ of sales, then broadened into NFL ALL DAY, Disney Pinnacle and, more recently, the consumer finance app Peak Money.
