OpenSea company
Overview
OpenSea is an NFT marketplace founded in December 2017 by Devin Finzer and Alex Atallah, inspired by the CryptoKitties craze, and accepted into Y Combinator in 2018. It became the dominant venue of the 2021 NFT boom: monthly transaction volume reached $3.4 billion with 1.8 million active users by August 2021, and daily volume peaked at $2.7 billion on 1 May 2022. Funding tracked that trajectory, from $2.1 million in November 2019 to a $23 million Series A in March 2021 and a $100 million Series B in July 2021 at a $1.5 billion valuation. The collapse was equally steep: by August 2022 daily volume had fallen roughly 99% to $9.34 million, and the company cut 20% of staff in July 2022. OpenSea has since pivoted beyond NFTs — its OS2 relaunch in 2025 added cryptocurrency trading across 22 blockchains and generated $1.6 billion in crypto trades within two weeks. Founded in December 2017, OpenSea peaked in 2021-2022 and then contracted sharply, laying off 20% of staff in July 2022. A February 2022 phishing attack cost users about $1.7 million in NFTs. Former head of product Nate Chastain was convicted of insider trading in May 2023 and sentenced to three months, though the conviction was overturned in July 2025. The SEC issued a Wells notice in August 2024 alleging NFTs traded on the platform were unregistered securities, then closed the investigation in February 2025.
