Overview

Robinhood Markets is an American financial services company founded in April 2013 by Stanford classmates Vladimir Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, both with prior high-frequency trading experience, and named after Robin Hood for its stated mission to 'democratize finance for all'. It pioneered zero-commission stock trading, earning revenue instead from payment for order flow (24% of Q1 2026 revenues), net interest income from margin lending and cash balances (34%), and commissions on options, cryptocurrency and other products. It went public on Nasdaq under ticker HOOD on 29 July 2021, raising approximately $2.1 billion at a roughly $32 billion valuation. The company entered crypto trading in February 2018 and expanded materially in 2025, acquiring exchange Bitstamp for $200 million and obtaining EU crypto licences, enabling wallet services and trading across multiple jurisdictions. As of March 2026 it reported 27.4 million funded customers, $307 billion in assets under custody, $4.47 billion in 2025 revenue and 2,900 employees, operating across the US, UK and EU with stocks, options, crypto, futures, banking and wealth management. On 28 January 2021 Robinhood restricted purchases of GameStop and related stocks amid collateral pressures, drawing intense criticism and congressional scrutiny; market-manipulation lawsuits were ultimately dismissed. Regulatory penalties include a $65 million SEC settlement (December 2020) over payment-for-order-flow disclosure, a $57 million FINRA fine (June 2021) over outages, a $30 million New York penalty (August 2022) for AML violations, and a $26 million FINRA penalty (March 2025) for AML deficiencies. In 2025 it acquired Bitstamp for $200 million.
