Overview

Bitstamp is one of the longest-running cryptocurrency exchanges, founded in 2011 in Slovenia by Nejc Kodrič and Damijan Merlak as a European alternative to Mt. Gox. It relocated to Luxembourg City in 2016, where the Luxembourg government licensed it as a fully EU-regulated payment institution, and it offers trading across multiple cryptocurrencies against fiat currencies including USD and EUR. In 2015 it suffered a hack in which fewer than 19,000 bitcoins were stolen, temporarily suspending service. Robinhood Markets agreed in 2024 to acquire Bitstamp for about $200 million and completed the deal in June 2025.
