Overview
Pantera Capital is an American investment firm specialising in cryptocurrencies and blockchain, running both hedge-fund and venture strategies, and is described as one of the largest digital-asset funds in the world. It was founded by Dan Morehead in San Francisco in 2003 as a macro hedge fund before pivoting to digital assets; Morehead previously held senior trading roles at Tiger Management and is regarded as a 'tiger cub' investor. The firm is headquartered in Menlo Park, California, with additional offices in New York and Puerto Rico (opened 2021). It launched the first US institutional bitcoin fund in 2013 with $13 million, which Wikipedia reports had returned 25,004% by December 2017. Venture Fund II raised $25 million in 2014 and Venture Fund III raised $175 million in 2018. As of 2025 Pantera managed roughly $5 billion in assets and remains active across liquid token, venture and early-stage crypto investing. Founded in 2003 as a traditional macro fund, Pantera reoriented around digital assets in 2013 with the launch of the first US institutional bitcoin fund. It expanded into venture with Fund II (2014, $25m) and Fund III (2018, $175m), and opened a Puerto Rico office in 2021. Senior personnel include managing partner Paul Veradittakit and general partners Franklin Bi and Cosmo Jiang.
