Overview
The Aligned Verification Layer is infrastructure for verifying zero-knowledge proofs cheaply and at scale for Ethereum applications, part of a vertically integrated stack Aligned describes as enabling provable execution. It offers two distinct modes. In the Proof Verification Layer, or fast mode, a set of operators verifies proofs off-chain with their work secured by restaking, achieving throughput Aligned describes as over two orders of magnitude higher than Ethereum - roughly 1,000-plus proofs per second against about 10 per second verified directly on-chain. In the Proof Aggregation Service, many proofs are recursively combined into a single proof that is then verified on Ethereum itself, which suits applications that can tolerate higher latency but want Ethereum's own security guarantees. The cost saving is substantial: Aligned cites nearly 90% lower cost for Groth16 proof systems and nearly 99% for STARKs compared with verifying directly on Ethereum. Security comes from restaking through EigenLayer, and Aligned positions itself as distinct from competitors by offering both modes while remaining linked to Ethereum rather than launching a separate layer-1. Aligned was built as an EigenLayer AVS for proof verification and later added the Proof Aggregation Service, giving developers a choice between low-latency restaking-secured verification and slower but Ethereum-secured recursive aggregation.
