Superchain product
Overview
The Superchain is Optimism's framework for a network of interoperable Ethereum layer 2 chains that all run the same open-source OP Stack, sharing security assumptions, upgrade paths and development standards rather than existing as isolated rollups. Its purpose is to counter Ethereum's fragmentation by unifying liquidity, security and tooling across dozens of chains. Members include Base, Unichain, Ink, World Chain, Soneium, Celo and OP Mainnet. Governance and neutrality are framed by the Law of Chains, published in draft by Optimism in July 2023 as an open-neutrality framework guiding governance decisions and promoting user protection, decentralisation and economic autonomy; it is explicitly a social contract rather than a legally binding document. It also sets the revenue arrangement: participating chains contribute the greater of 2.5% of sequencer revenue or 15% of net sequencer profits to the Optimism Collective. That model has historically generated an estimated $4.5 million annually for the Collective's treasury, with the largest share coming from Coinbase's Base. Optimism published a draft Law of Chains in July 2023 to govern the Superchain, and the OP Stack has since been adopted by Base, Unichain, Ink, World Chain, Soneium and Celo. Revenue sharing under the framework has been an ongoing source of debate as the economics of individual chains have grown.
