ZK Stack protocol
Overview
The ZK Stack is a modular, free and open-source framework released by Matter Labs for building custom zero-knowledge-powered blockchains, based on the codebase of ZKsync Era. It lets developers deploy their own ZK chains either as layer 2 networks running in parallel to ZKsync Era or as layer 3 networks settling on top of it. Its two headline properties are sovereignty and connectivity: the chain creator owns the code outright and has unrestricted freedom to customise every aspect of the chain, while chains built with the stack are designed to interoperate natively rather than being isolated. Chains built this way were originally branded Hyperchains; following a trademark collision they were renamed the Elastic Chain, announced in conjunction with the ZKsync 3.0 network upgrade. The ZK Stack is the ZK-rollup counterpart to frameworks like the OP Stack, and is used to stand up application-specific ZK chains. Matter Labs released the ZK Stack in mid-2023 as an open-source framework derived from ZKsync Era, with chains built on it called Hyperchains. Those chains were later rebranded to the Elastic Chain after a trademark collision, alongside the ZKsync 3.0 upgrade.
