Project Mariana project
Overview
Project Mariana was an experiment by the BIS Innovation Hub with the Bank of France, the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Swiss National Bank, testing cross-border trading and settlement of wholesale central bank digital currencies using DeFi techniques on a public blockchain. Launched in November 2022 and concluded in 2023, it used an automated market maker to pool hypothetical Swiss franc, euro and Singapore dollar wholesale CBDCs so spot FX transactions could be priced, executed and settled automatically. The partners reported successful trading and settlement and noted benefits including instant settlement and the ability to host several currencies in one pool. The BIS stressed the work was purely experimental and did not signal any intent to issue wholesale CBDC.
