Swiss National Bank regulator
Overview
The Swiss National Bank (SNB) is Switzerland's central bank and one of the most active central banks in wholesale central bank digital currency experimentation, through Project Helvetia. The project, run with the BIS Innovation Hub and SIX, tested issuing a Swiss franc wholesale CBDC restricted to financial institutions and using it to settle tokenised assets on the same distributed ledger, enabling atomic delivery-versus-payment. Project Helvetia III went beyond experiment into a live pilot, the first issuance of a wholesale CBDC on a regulated third-party platform, the SIX Digital Exchange, where participating banks settled tokenised bond transactions in digital Swiss francs. The SNB extended the pilot, which is set to run until at least June 2028.
