Overview
The Aave DAO is the decentralised autonomous organisation that owns and governs the Aave lending protocol, the largest DeFi money market by deposits. Aave began in 2017 as ETHLend, a peer-to-peer lending platform founded by the Finnish lawyer Stani Kulechov, and relaunched in January 2020 under the name Aave - Finnish for 'ghost' - with a pooled liquidity model in which depositors supply assets to shared pools and borrowers draw over-collateralised loans against them. Control sits with holders of the AAVE token, who vote through the DAO on protocol upgrades, asset listings, risk parameters and treasury spending; the DAO also commissions risk managers, analytics providers and other service providers. As of May 2025 the Aave protocol recorded net deposits of EUR 40.3 billion, and Bloomberg reported in February 2025 that Aave remained the largest DeFi lending platform by deposits. The DAO also governs GHO, the over-collateralised stablecoin Aave announced in 2023, whose facilitators and bucket caps are set by governance vote. Aave launched in 2017 as ETHLend and was relaunched in January 2020 as Aave with a liquidity pool model. Governance moved to AAVE token holders through the Aave DAO, which has since launched successive protocol versions and, in 2023, the GHO stablecoin.
