Also known as: Umbrella, Aave Safety Module v2

Overview

Umbrella is Aave's safety mechanism for covering protocol bad debt, replacing the older Safety Module design. Users stake aTokens — for example aUSDC, aWETH or aUSDT — into Umbrella and continue to earn the underlying supply yield plus additional Umbrella incentives. In exchange, staked positions are exposed to automated slashing: rather than requiring a governance vote after the fact, Umbrella reads on-chain deficit data for the relevant reserve and burns staked assets to cover a shortfall when one is recorded. The result is a per-asset, automated backstop, with stakers accepting slashing risk in return for higher yield.
