Overview

Compound V3 is the same protocol as Compound III (Comet) — the names are used interchangeably in the project's own documentation. It is an EVM lending market in which each deployment has one borrowable base asset and a set of approved collateral assets that can be supplied but not borrowed; on the original Ethereum deployment the base asset is USDC and the user-facing proxy is cUSDCv3. Base-asset suppliers earn interest; collateral suppliers do not, but their collateral is not rehypothecated. The protocol is governed by holders of the COMP token, who vote on new markets, asset listings and risk parameters, and deployment artefacts for each network are published in the Comet repository. Security assurance comes from audits by OpenZeppelin and ChainSecurity, published verifiable source code and a bug bounty programme, with developer support coordinated through the Compound Discord and the comp.xyz forum. Compound V3 replaced the V2 architecture's multi-asset borrowing with a single base asset per market, first shipping on Ethereum with USDC, and has since been extended to further networks through COMP governance votes.
