Karak Vaults protocol
Overview
Karak Vaults were the deposit primitive of Karak, a multi-chain 'universal restaking' protocol: each accepted asset had its own dedicated vault implemented on the ERC-4626 standard, users restaked by depositing into operator vaults, and operators then registered with Distributed Secure Services (DSS) to supply economic security to other networks and applications. Karak was built by Andalusia Labs, which announced a $48 million Series A on 8 April 2024 at a valuation above $1 billion, with backers including Lightspeed, Pantera, Coinbase and Framework, alongside the launch of the Karak blockchain testnet and a global HQ in Abu Dhabi. Karak also operated K2, an EVM-compatible risk-management Layer 2 rollup powered by its DSS and used as a sandbox environment. Importantly, the project has since rebranded: DefiLlama's protocol entry for 'karak' now resolves to 'OpenGDP Shared Security', with the handle OpenGDP and the site opengdp.network, positioning itself as a high-performance L1 with built-in rails for price discovery, trading and settlement. Per the DefiLlama API read on 22 July 2026 the entry held about $4.7M on Ethereum, $0.76M on Arbitrum, $0.66M on K2 and smaller balances on Mantle, BNB Chain, Blast and Fraxtal — far below the deposit levels the protocol attracted at its 2024 peak. Karak launched in 2024 as a restaking competitor to EigenLayer, drawing large deposits quickly and reaching a reported $1bn valuation with its $48M Series A in April 2024. It faced early community backlash over the team's past work. The protocol has since rebranded to OpenGDP, refocusing from restaking towards a programmable-economy L1; a sibling Andalusia Labs product, Subsea, is a risk-management marketplace built on Karak.
