Overview

KyberSwap is the multi-chain DEX aggregator and liquidity protocol built by Kyber Network, routing swaps across many decentralised exchanges and operating its own liquidity products, of which KyberSwap Elastic was the concentrated-liquidity AMM. It is best known outside DeFi circles for a severe exploit: on 22-23 November 2023 an attacker drained the Elastic pools across multiple chains, with loss estimates ranging from about $46 million to $48.8 million depending on the source. The attack exploited a flaw in how the concentrated-liquidity contracts handled rounding at the boundaries of liquidity positions — a reentrancy-style sequence of carefully constructed trades that tricked the contracts into releasing more funds than intended. Kyber alerted users on 23 November and advised withdrawing funds. Recovery was partial: the team recovered $4.67 million, and on 26 November said it had contacted operators of front-running bots that had themselves extracted about $5.7 million from Elastic pools on Polygon and Avalanche. Kyber subsequently halved its workforce and worked on victim reimbursement plans. KyberSwap operated as a multi-chain aggregator with its own Classic and Elastic AMMs until the November 2023 Elastic exploit, which cost roughly $46-48.8 million and cut TVL by around 68%. Kyber recovered $4.67 million, engaged front-running bot operators who had drained a further $5.7 million on Polygon and Avalanche, cut its workforce by half and set out reimbursement plans.
