Overview
ZRO is the native governance token of LayerZero, an omnichain interoperability protocol that lets applications send data, value and contract instructions across more than 70 blockchains as if they were one network, moving beyond conventional bridge designs toward a general messaging standard. LayerZero Labs was co-founded by Bryan Pellegrino (CEO), Ryan Zarick (CTO) and Caleb Banister. ZRO has a total supply of 1 billion tokens and gives holders a vote on protocol proposals. The token launched in June 2024 with an airdrop of 85 million tokens — 8.5% of supply — to roughly 1.28 million wallets, following aggressive Sybil filtering that removed 803,273 wallets, about 59% of applicants, as suspected bots. The claim mechanism drew significant controversy: eligible wallets had to make a 'proof-of-donation' payment of $0.10 in ETH per ZRO claimed to Protocol Guild, which funds Ethereum protocol contributors. Critics said this pushed costs onto retail holders, while Pellegrino argued it aligned recipients with the wider ecosystem. LayerZero Labs was founded by Bryan Pellegrino, Ryan Zarick and Caleb Banister.
