Overview

Moonriver is an EVM-compatible smart contract platform built with the Substrate framework and deployed as a parachain on Kusama, Polkadot's 'canary network'. It exists as the sister chain and testing ground for Moonbeam on Polkadot: features are shipped to Moonriver under real economic conditions before reaching Moonbeam. Moonriver included the first functional EVM deployed on Kusama, with deep Ethereum compatibility — a unified account structure in which Moonriver addresses are identical to Ethereum addresses, a Web3 RPC, and precompiles — so Ethereum-native tooling and integrations work with little modification. The native token MOVR is used to pay transaction fees, to participate in consensus through staking, and to vote on governance proposals. Published performance figures cite roughly 12-second block times, average fees often below $0.01-$0.05 for a simple transfer, and practical throughput in the tens to low hundreds of transactions per second with higher burst capacity. Moonriver completed its launch sequence and went live on Kusama as that network's first fully functional EVM parachain, serving as the canary deployment for the Moonbeam network on Polkadot. It became one of the most used parachains in the Kusama ecosystem.
