zkSync Lite chain
Overview
ZKsync Lite, originally launched as zkSync 1.0 in June 2020 by Matter Labs, was Ethereum's first zero-knowledge rollup. It was a payments-focused layer 2 supporting token transfers, atomic swaps and NFT minting, but it had no general smart contract functionality. Matter Labs stopped shipping engineering updates for it in early 2023 and moved its team to ZKsync Era, a full-featured zkEVM, and the ZK Stack. The network is being wound down: ZKsync has confirmed that ZKsync Lite will be fully deprecated on 4 May 2026, when block production stops permanently and the final state is frozen. It continued to operate normally in the run-up, with ZKsync saying users needed to take no immediate action, but roughly $33.9 million in assets remained bridged to it as of L2BEAT data — nearly $24.9 million in stablecoins, about $8.4 million in ETH and derivatives, over $313,000 in BTC derivatives and roughly $231,000 in other assets. Launched June 2020 as zkSync 1.0, the first ZK rollup on Ethereum. Matter Labs halted engineering updates in early 2023 to focus on ZKsync Era and the ZK Stack. ZKsync announced deprecation and confirmed a permanent shutdown date of 4 May 2026, with about $33.9 million still bridged as of February 2026 reporting.
