Overview
Akash Network is a decentralised cloud computing marketplace that its own documentation likens to 'Airbnb for data centres', matching people who need compute with operators who have spare capacity. The system has three roles: providers, who run the underlying hardware and Kubernetes clusters; the Akash Network marketplace itself, which coordinates supply and demand; and tenants, who deploy applications as Docker containers. Rather than fixed list pricing, Akash uses a marketplace in which tenants publish a deployment specification and providers bid to host it, so prices are set competitively rather than administratively. Akash positions itself against hyperscale clouds on cost-efficiency, choice, standardised resources, open-source principles and community involvement, and the network has extended from generic CPU workloads into GPU capacity for AI and machine-learning jobs. Documentation covers running full nodes and validators, provider installation via a Provider Playbook and Kubespray, official Go and JavaScript/TypeScript SDKs, and a managed wallet API. Akash grew out of work to build a permissionless alternative to centralised cloud providers and has expanded from container hosting on commodity CPUs into a marketplace for GPU compute serving AI workloads.
